Post subject: Ability to assign an article to multiple categories/sections
|

I know this is impossible through joomla, but deep pockets is a component that is able to do this, kind of.
It would be great if this was possible through ijoomla and for me, would make the iJoomla people really really cool....in my book....as if that means something.
Have you guys considered this and is it possible?
My site has over 100 sections for different teams, so obviously my articles would have greater visibility if this could happen.
Duplicating articles I've begun doing, and the more I do it, the more I realize it's a horrible workaround for a variety of reasons.
Thanks. |

I posted stuff about this on the main joomla component forums and was linked to a couple other threads discussing this, without any luck...except some weird workaround with the "bookmarks" component. The bookmarks component, which I actually have, has not been updated in forever.
What it does is allow you to assign a bookmark to multiple categories and sections. I'm guessing the workaround had something to do with bookmarking all of your articles, then assigning it throughout and using it as a sort of index.
Now that I write that out, it actually is a nifty little idea. Still, a ton of upkeep for my site and not the best resolution.
Anyways, I figured some of the other News Portal people might want the same flexibility. That's something I'd pay for, for sure. |

Hehe, I've just wrote a post here talking about this issue.
Basically what you want is Tags, like in any normal blogging software (anyone said wordpress?) This allows you to have endless amount of sections/categories.
You have very few components that allows this. Phil Taylor's TAGS is probably the only one that is mature enough, though I must admit I haven't really tested it seriously yet.
The problem with these few tags packages is that they all just throw you to the search page looking for articles with this word, where as I'd like to be sent to a news page on that word.
Another thing I thought of, to comply with the Section / Category structure of joomla, is to dynamically consider every requested tag as a Section, and all the other tags that appear with it, as categories.
For example, consider these 2 articles:
- "Microsoft Releases Halo 3" - tagged under Microsoft, Halo, New Releases
- "EA acquired Microsoft" - tagged under EA, Microsoft
Clicking on the tag Microsoft will lead us to a news page of the 'Section' Microsoft, with all the news that has the tag Microsoft. In addition, the tags EA, Halo and New Releases - will all be considered categories of the Microsoft section in the eye of the News Portal.
You should, however, allow an additional zone be assigned based on a tag, which will allow you to design a special way to show it. For example, I have Featured Articles (technical articles I publish exclusively). I want to present them in a different box on the page. I currently use the 'popular stories' for that, but allowing me to have a special zone for them would be awesome.
This could allow a really big flexibility, not to mention the tagging system is changing how Joomla is working completely. And with all due respect to Phil Taylor (and I do have respect), I'm sure Merav and the gang of iJoomla can write something much nicer. |

Yes, I'm glad someone else feels my pain...tagging is basically what I'm getting at.
And how you explained, "tagging" to a news section not a search section.
1 article, many sections if applicable, but with one main section for seo purposes.
This is possible on a variety of sites and is a great way to spread out content.
Tagging is one way to put it, but how I'd like it to be designed is so you can simply click on multiple section buttons to submit to those areas. That way, people can't create new tags I don't want to exist.
But yeah, this option is needed. |
