Removal of Certain Branding Links

While it is a respected practice of protecting your source code and very understandable. I find it really annoying that we can not remove the Branding plastered all over the backend.

There are a few points of view on this:
1. The company who runs a magazine site and doesnt want their competitors using what they have. Its not what we want our competitors to find or use!
2. Editors on the backend: We Dont want links to RocketTheme or any other template sites with affiliate links. Its almost as annoying as purchasing or downloading software with POPUP Advertisements. Except this stuff is hard coded in....

3. Open Source Source is what Joomla is ALL about and one of the many reasons why Joomla is thriving today, stems from the fact it IS and ALWAYS will be Open Source.

4. When people use open source software, many of them respect the rights of the authors and are honest in the use of the script or softs, but when you PAY for a service/script or soft and THEN you can't remove BRANDING or Links to other affiliate sites... That really SUCKS! I mean come on! I purchased this component and at first used the first version and then installed the BETA version. NOW I HAVE NO FREEDOM TO REMOVE LINKS OR BRANDING!

I think you should make it easier for your users to remove such obtrusive markup. Or even offer a fee to get it OUT of the component if requested!

you can remove the "powered by ijoomla magazine" message from the front-end easily enough . the instructions are on this forum... do a search and you'll find them.

as for the other bits, these guys work hard to provide this plugin and you cant expect everyone in the world to work for free, not everyone has the time nor money to do so and in order to create and offer these plugins they need to charge a small fee. i'm all for the open source movement but i also respect people who are trying to run a business and make a living and where the developer asks for cash i'm happy to pay if its something i use especially if it means they dedicate their time to it and make sure its as good as they can make it. you may get free soup at a shelter but you cant expect every restaurant in the world to give you free food because of that fact.

as for the affiliate links, they arent obtrusive, i havent felt the need to click one of them, they dont permeate the whole admin panel just this component and to be honest a lot of components do the same thing.

perhaps you got frustrated by the copyright message and just went on a little rant as we all like to do from time to time (i know i do Smile

) but these guys are doing a good job here so you could probably cut them a little slack eh? Smile

There is of course the issue of writing software that is an extension of OPEN SOURCE software.

iJoomla is a good component and don't think there's a problem with their layout from an admin perspective. If you've got customers that use the admin interface, I don't think they expect all this power from yourself, otherwise you could charge $100K LOL

What I would say on this is that for any developer that creates a commercial extension to an open source project, they should at the very least create an open source 'free' version, with real checks for this so as not to *iss off paying customers.

There should be IMHO some rules from the main Joomla developers whereby all add-on developers create a free 'Powered By' version. This helps Joomla, the end add-on developer, and for those that are willing, or have to use free (you do get what you pay for in life), then all benefit.

When you consider that to get a REAL Joomla based EXTENSIVE featured site, you have to pay over $300, and adding Powered by to commercial add-ons is a real no go.

I hope our future downloads don't include intended bugs Very Happy

Personally I think it would be very nice (and handy) if the 'powered by iJoomla Magazine' in the front end could be removed by a simple switch in the back-end. Maybe under 'general settings' there can be a 'display branding' yes/no option.

This, for me, is a small but annoying barrier to upgrading - having to go into the source code each time you upgrade is a bit of a pain. I appreciate that its really easy but it might attract a few more users if they don't have to go into the code each upgrade.
