Post subject: Possible to assign different modules to different editions!
|
|
|
Hi,
I have figured out a way to assign different modules to different editions. Since the editions are plain links, you can not assign a module to it in Joomla. So, it is not possible to show menumodule X on edition Y only.
There is a thread in this forum about how to get around this problem, by making changes in the database. This works, unless you use any SEF-program, since it makes corrupt URL:s
But I have worked out a way of doing this very, very simple - without hacking or changing of databases.
Here's the solution:
1. Make the editions you want to have on your site.
2. You need to get the editions' URL. Publish the module "Back Issues". If you don't want others to see it, just make it Special.
3. Click the edition link and copy the address in the browser address window.
4. Create a new link item, choose type: Link URL.
5. Paste the address
6. Remove the part "&Itemid=xx" from the address.
7. Click Save
If you click on a module now, you will see that the link you just made is in the list of links to which you can assign the modules to.
Why does this work? Because Joomla will automatically add a Itemid unless there is none. The original edition address already contains a Itemid and Joomla will not add one. and then the link will not show up where you assign modules.
I have only tried this on Joomla 1.0.10. Hope someone else will have good use of this information.
Cheers,

I am making use of this information on the following website
http://www.g84.org/
What would be back editions are now links at the top of the left sidebar. This is a work in progress.
my main problem just now is the double pathway at the top of the page which I'd like to get sorted out

Hi - I was interested in this solution for 2 teasons:-
1 Looks like something I'll have to play with
2. I got my start in journalism on the Helensburgh & Gareloch Times back in 197x (the dates changed to protect the guilty!).
Now publishing in Singapore...
have a look @ Packwebasia.com - still work in progress, but we'll be 'live' 1 Sept.
A couple of things which might be useful:
a. I used the 'old' Jumla Section/category menu as a transmenu top-right ( Archive by Sector)
b. Created another transmenu link to Magazines & issues under 'Member services' (we have more than 140 issues so it's taking a bit of time to upload & lay-out more than 3,000 articles)
c. Modules Bottom of page: Last Month calls off the 'top' 5 & 10 Years ago does what it says & links to articles of this month 10 years ago - well not quite because we haven't uploaded everything yet.
Just thought I'd share. We'll post a link on the New Magazine thread when we go live. |

Was this tested and is there a working link?
A My back issues already have no ItemID
B Adding them to the LINK URL shows up but no modules show up when assigned. |

hi, i tried to apply your solution to magazine version 2, but could not figure it out. what i want is to have my articles open without user1 (current article module) and user2 (featured article module) positions on top of the article.
vina.cc/joomla
i would appreciate if you could elaborate how to do that, the explanation which you gave is not clear to me. i am using magazine version 2.0.16 |

This works for the issue main page but not for any article pages inside the other issues unless you select "All" for the module.
Anyway to work around this?
Thanks

Hi,
Joomla handles assinment of modules by itemid. If you want a certain module to appear on a specific page you will have to create a menu link to that page (without itemid in the URL - joomla will add one by itself). Then this page will show in the list when you assign the module. But usually you don't want the link in the menu. Solution: create a new menumodule, called it hidden for example. Create all links to specific pages in that menu module. But do not publish the menu module. But you have to publish the links within.
Good luck,

I'm not sure why this isn't working for me... I have created menu links to the articles. They show up iin the module list.. and I select that page for the module to show up. But the modules still don't publilsh to that page.
I'm using OpenSEF-could that be the problem?
thanks

I just tried this but it's not working for me. Well, it does in parts ...
I am still using Version 2.0.05 btw...
Looked for the URL to my magazine, created a link leaving the item ID off and when I call the URL without the item ID - manually - it works. I can remove previously assigned modules by not making them active for the specified link.
BUT
Since I need a link to the magazine I added it to my top-menu (again without the item ID) but Joomla automatically adds an item ID leading my users to a completely different magazine issue. When I leave the item ID in , the modules I do not want there are still there.
ALSO
Since I now created a link to the magazine that shows up in the top-menu I thought I could add the modules I want there but they are not showing up either.
Any ideas ? |

I couldn't get this to work either so I decided to find out why.
I found out it would not work for me because I had SEO on. Maybe it worked for someone else but not me. I turned SEO off in the global config. Recreated the link using the method above and joomla then assigned an ID to it for me (itemid 50). I then went back and turned SEO back on and grabbed the same link since it's more SEO friendly using the same steps mentioned above, but this time left the itemed on it (itemid 50 in this case) and it's working fine for me now.
Maybe that will help some of those with problems or just confuse you more
