16  iJoomla News Portal / Pre-Sales Questions / Re: Will Newsportal work for this? on: February 01, 2008, 02:48:42 PM
Cheri, all you would need for that would be a simple link on a web page saying 'click here to download a PDF of our newspaper'.
If you want to create an online version of a newspaper you are going to have to do much much more.
Presumably that's why your client is looking to hire you.
I do just this using iJoomla.
The client copies me in on the PDF's they send to the printers.
Using Acrobat Professional 8 I extract the text and save pages as JPG's to cut out pictures, I also print out pages as reference.
I input the text as individual articles in Joomla and add a picture to each one.
I then fire up iJoomla magazine, create a new issue and add articles after referencing print outs to see what the headline stories are.
I then pick out the centre pages article and make this the 'featured article'.
There are no shortcuts to making an online publication but there is no doubt iJoomla Magazine is the only real solution, iJoomla News Portal for a constantly updated news site.
Hope that helps.

17  iJoomla Magazine / Support Questions / Re: Getting Magazine links active on: February 01, 2008, 02:44:37 AM
I had a look through the old forum and there's a thread on this issue here;
http://tinyurl.com/3x6wx2
Someone comes up with a hack involving jos_menu which I tried but it doesn't seem to work, probably because of new versions of Joomla and Magazine.
Looking at a few of the websites of the users asking the questions it looks like they got it fixed, I wonder what the solution was.

Hi Ricardo,
Thanks for the reply but, yes, I am sure... from the way that I am working.
Maybe I am doing it wrong and I would be very interested in what these guys methodology was to get that working.
Is it a template issue ?
I've tried RocketThemes, YooTheme and Joomla Shack.
None of them leave the menu in an 'active' state when linked to magazines or their issues.
Maybe it;s a core Joomla thing I'm doing wrong though.
As far as I can see, the only way to add a menu link to a magazine or an issue of a magazine is to add a link to a url in a Joomla menu.
19  iJoomla Magazine / Support Questions / Getting Magazine links active on: January 30, 2008, 11:05:26 AM
I'm looking for a little help here from Magazine users.
I'm using Magazine now to organise my site and not just as an online magazine.
The only way to use a menu item to link to a magazine or an issue is to use a url link.
The problem with this is that it doesn't put the menu item into an 'active' status and is therefore not at all good from a useability point of view.
Is there anyway around this problem ?
Thanks in advance for any thoughts.
20  iJoomla Search & Archive / Support Questions / Thumbnails do not appear after upgrade on: January 27, 2008, 03:23:10 PM
After upgrading to the latest version thumbnail picture do not appear in the archive items.

Update: The previous version used a thumbnail of image associated with a content item, the new version only appears to use an image if it is inserted in the content itself.
This does not suit me and so I have gone back to the previous version.
21  iJoomla Magazine / Suggestions/Ideas / Presets for Issues on: January 23, 2008, 12:19:19 PM
I would like to see presets available for Issues.
At the minute I have to manually set layouts & CSS for each issue.
That's maybe not a great deal of time but anything saved is useful and also it would be easier to have less skilled users inupt an issue without them having to be taught what the Issue settings are.

I can't either. I really enjoy the email saying "Please do let us know if you have any questions." when the return address is "DO_NOT_REPLY@ijoomla.com". Perhaps it should be "we_have_your_money_now_go_away@ijoomla.com", because it really seems like they're acting that way. Hello, ijoomla? We paid you for a very limited license that doesn't work! Talk to us!

Oh behave yourself please, iJoomla has absolutely excellent support and your license includes upgrades for life.
Search the forum and open a support ticket if you can't find an answer.
24  iJoomla Magazine / Suggestions/Ideas / 'Author' settings very inflexible on: January 13, 2008, 01:36:45 PM
I am using iJoomla magazine for an online version of a twice monthly 12 page newspaper.
Each issue has approximately 20 articles in it.
Half of those are from regular contributors but some are from people who maybe only write a couple of articles a year, some only one off's.
Pepole want to know who the authors are and having a biog is extra interest.
As things stand, though, I have to give each one of those authors a login to my Joomla site in order to use this function.
My feeling is that the authors functionality should allow the creation of authors and biography without requiring email etc.

Yes, thanks very much for that, very useful.

Can I add my voice for a basic explanation of the purpose of this component.
I work in the world of non-profit websites (phew !) and don't really understand why having links on your website to other sites is bad for your Google ranking.
Obviously I want to have my non-profit sites high on a Google search but as it doesn't cost me money there's no absolute imperative.
Maybe I need to join the SE0 club !
Anyway, a basic explanation of why this component is a good thing will more than likely cause me to give iJoomla more money.
