Hi gringohh,
iJoomla News Portal doesn´t slow your site. Maybe you have another problem (external pictures, java problems, etc).
Please check with this tool.
Anyway, let me know if your problem persists.
Best regards,

I've checked with the tool you recommended, and the following results came back:

Analysis and Recommendations

    * TOTAL_HTML - Congratulations, the total number of HTML files on this page (including the main HTML file) is 1 which most browsers can multithread. Minimizing HTTP requests is key for web site optimization.
    * TOTAL_OBJECTS - Warning! The total number of objects on this page is 304 - consider reducing this to a more reasonable number. Combine, refine, and optimize your external objects. Replace graphic rollovers with CSS rollovers to speed display and minimize HTTP requests.
    * TOTAL_IMAGES - Warning! The total number of images on this page is 272 , consider reducing this to a more reasonable number. Combine, refine, and optimize your graphics. Replace graphic rollovers with CSS rollovers to speed display and minimize HTTP requests.
    * TOTAL_CSS - Warning! The total number of external CSS files on this page is 16 , consider reducing this to one or two external files. Combine, refine, and optimize your external CSS files. Ideally you should have one (or even embed CSS for high-traffic pages) on your pages.
    * TOTAL_SIZE - Warning! The total size of this page is 1387543 bytes, which will load in 337.34 seconds on a 56Kbps modem. Consider reducing total page size to less than 30K to achieve sub eight second response times on 56K connections. Pages over 100K exceed most attention thresholds at 56Kbps, even with feedback. Consider contacting us about our optimization services.
    * TOTAL_SCRIPT - Warning! The total number of external script files on this page is 15 , consider reducing this to a more reasonable number. Combine, refine, and optimize your external script files. Ideally you should have one (or even embed scripts for high-traffic pages) on your pages.
    * HTML_SIZE - Warning! The total size of this HTML page is 107663 bytes, which is over 100K! Consider optimizing your HTML and eliminating unnecessary content and features.
    * IMAGES_SIZE - Warning! The total size of your images is 953299 bytes, which is over 30K. Consider optimizing your images for size, combining them, and replacing graphic rollovers with CSS.
    * SCRIPT_SIZE - Warning! The total size of external your scripts is 190159 bytes, which is over 8K. Consider optimizing your scripts for size, combining them, and using compression where appropriate for any scripts placed in the HEAD of your documents.
    * CSS_SIZE - Warning! The total size of your external CSS is 136422 bytes, which is over 8K. Consider optimizing your CSS for size by eliminating whitespace, using shorthand notation, and combining multiple CSS files where appropriate.
    * MULTIM_SIZE - Congratulations, the total size of all your external multimedia files is 0 bytes, which is less than 4K.

Any suggestions, I'm not an experienced programmer

Yeah your site takes over a minute to load!!  I have a component on my site called pagecache, it works wonders, and it is free.  However I have noticed that most joomla sites take longer to load.

Also since you have a rocket theme template, make sure none of your modules have mootools being loaded because the template loads it automatically.  This will cause errors and a slowdown time.

a little off topic, but how did you get the news to popup up in a tooltip? and how did you get and image to show up beside the title of the section?

Check this warnings.
Also, I detected too many problems with xajax.js (whosonline module) and a  mootools problem.
If you need more information, check the log from your cpanel.

the newsportal is not default homepage, the one with tooltip is a plain homepage w/out newsportal. and fyi tht tooltip u can get from joomla module external. since u said this case OFF-TOPIC: how to solve this slow problem with newsportal?

if it about my website, i don't think i am using those modules tht u've mention. enclose here my error log when i run newsportal as my default homepage. your advice is highly appreciated.

Code:
[Thu Jan 24 12:14:08 2008] [error] [client 202.75.62.13] File does not exist: /home/mytoday/public_html/404.shtml

Check which extension are you using and try to find a solution. Maybe is a chmod problem...
I suggest you to install firebug (FF plugin).
