You know it’s important to have a blog on your website. Google loves fresh content, and many companies report they get more traffic to their blog than to any other page on their site.
Joomla does have some blogging capabilities built in. You can create a category and a menu item that links to a list of articles in blog format. It’s simple enough, but it’s also missing many of the cool features available for WordPress, the most advanced blogging software available.
So how can you keep your Joomla site and still enjoy all of the benefits of WordPress?
It used to be [...] read more »

Joomla 1.6 alpha is already here, and the beta version will be released in August 2009.In this presentation Andrew Eddie explains the changes and the new features of Joomla 1.6. Unfortunately, like with the case of Joomla 1.5, this is not going to be a simple upgrade (currently there is no upgrade plan). The good news is that ACL and Nested Categories will be included. We at iJoomla.com, plan to start modifying our extensions to work with Joomla 1.6 within 2-3 months, and hopefully by the time it’s stable, we will be supporting it (no promises though).
Thoughts:
If you’re still working [...] read more »

As promised, guys at the JED (Joomla Extensions Directory) have removed all the commercial (and non-commercial) NON-GPL extensions. This is a big hit for all the commercial developers who spent a lot of time and money developing these extensions, counting on JED to provide the traffic. As we knew this was coming, we’ve created our own directory, listing all the commercial NON-GPL extensions, so that developers can promote them and so that users can find them easily and rate/review them.
So if you need to find a commercial extensions, go to extensions.ijoomla.com, and don’t forget to rate/review extensions you are using!

Over the years I’ve been involved in Joomla, I’ve seen some great improvements in templates. Many templates are now very sophisticated, slick and beautiful. Just compare the early work of any of the veteran template providers with their recent efforts to see the quantum leaps they’ve all made.
But while looks have improved, front-end usability — hasn’t. Many Joomla templates don’t take usage into consideration. They’re missing some of the most basic features, making it difficult for novice developers to create a user-friendly site. I know I’m constantly hacking templates to make them do what I want.
Now that template providers have [...] read more »

Website real estate is so important. You want to make the most of each of your pages, especially the area “above the fold” that users can see before they scroll down the page.
Joomla’s new login module though is HUGE. In fact, at 159px X 258px, it’s about 43 percent taller than the old version! Yes, I know there are a bunch of new links to “forgot password” and “forgot username” etc., but making this module so big shows little understanding of usability and web optimization.
The premium real estate on your website should be about getting people to convert… to subscribers, [...] read more »

While I was working on this new iJoomla.com site (version 1.5), I noticed that every time I logged in to the admin, the number of “online users” had grown. Only four people were working on the site — myself, the designer and a couple of programmers — but the number just seemed to keep getting bigger.
Last time I checked, 127 people were logged in!
The problem wasn’t that the four of us were handing out passwords like business cards at a convention. It was that Joomla logs online users time after time, and keeps them “logged in” for much longer than [...] read more »

Joomla has over 3,000 extensions. Some are good. Some are bad. Some are
useful. Some you’ll never use. And some are cooler than a polar bear in
sunglasses. These are the ten extensions that I think are the neatest.
iJoomla SideBars
- My favorite iJoomla product. Okay, I admit it. I’m biased. But I still love it. It’s so easy to use and very, very helpful. I put it on every site I create. I can toss videos into my articles, RSS feeds, modules, and anything else I want. You can read more about it here, view demo here or buy it here. We [...] read more »

In this edition, I’m going to be talking about RSS reader modules for Joomla.
RSS Readers allow you to display articles or news reports that appear on someone else’s website on your Web pages. RSS reader modules let you display this content in a module position.
You’ll get free and fresh content from another site; the RSS feed provider gets freetraffic, exposure and incoming links that are great for SEO. Everyone wins.
The RSS feed itself is essentially the URL of an XML file. How the URL looks will depend on the feed but it usually looks something like this:
http://feeds.feedburner.com/ijoomla/meravkn/AllSectionsCategories
http://www.ijoomla.com/index.php?option=com_ijoomla_rss&act=xml&cat=77&feedtype=RSS2.0
